Wanted: Community Programming Assistant

Job Purpose

The Community Programming Assistant supports the Community Program Coordinator in delivering Community Programmes such as the Inuit Women’s Circle at Qajuqturvik Community Food Centre (QCFC).

Duties and Responsibilities

With the support of the Program Coordinator, the Community Programming Assistant is responsible for:

  • Assisting the Community Program Coordinator in facilitating programming meant to educate and engage community members with issues connected to food insecurity and poverty

  • Assisting with special events and workshops as needed 

  • Other duties may be assigned by the Program Director. 

  • Travel may be required. 

  • Work is indoors (office/common space) and consists primarily of clerical work and communication with the public. Discretion is needed when dealing with sensitive and traumatic personal issues. Physical fatigue could be a consequence of mental exertion.

  • Perform additional related duties as needed

Skills and Qualifications

  • 1 or more years experience in community development or in social services sector

  • Ability to demonstrate compassion, openness, and keep to standards of confidentiality

  • Experience working with individuals facing issues such as substance abuse, trauma, mental health, housing and food insecurity

  • Ability to work as part of a team and independently with minimal supervision

  • Strong administrative, organizational, and communication skills

  • Must hold or be willing to obtain a valid Class 5 Nunavut driver’s license

  • Fluency in Inuktitut is a strong asset

  • A degree or diploma in social services is not required but is considered a strong asset

  • Other lived experiences, education, and skills will be considered in lieu of formal education and related work experience  

  • A vulnerable sector check and positive references may be requested.

  • In conformance with Article 23 of the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement, preference will be given to Inuit applicants.

Working Conditions

  • 5 days per week, 7.5 hours per day

  • Ability to work evenings and weekends as required during events or peak periods

Compensation

  • $70,000 - $80,000 per year
