Food Skills Coordinator
The Qajuqturvik Food Centre (QFC) seeks a Food Skills Coordinator (FSC) for its facility in the heart of Iqaluit. This is a full-time position.
The QFC is a registered charity that conducts varied programming with the aim of addressing the causes and effects of food insecurity on Iqalummiut and the community of Iqaluit as a whole. The QFC works in partnership with Community Food Centres Canada (CFCC) and is set to become a partner site this year. For more information, visit qajuqturvik.ca or cfccanada.ca
The FSC ensures that food skills program are organized, implemented and evaluated. As such, in coordination with other staff and volunteers, the FSC is responsible for:
- developing, implementing and maintaining programming in cooking, nutrition, harvesting and growing, in line with QFC’s objectives and budgetary limitations;
- determining and maintaining staffing and volunteering requirements for various programs;
- leading activities for people of varied ages and backgrounds, in coordination with staff and volunteers;
- preparing and serving community meals in coordination with staff and volunteers;
- engaging in community outreach to identify potential participants, volunteers and partner organizations;
- creating community food resources;
- evaluating programs and preparing reports; and
- serving as a representative for QFC within the community.
Other duties will be assigned by the ED as the mission and scope of the QFC continues to evolve. Travel may be required, as well as an ability to handle multiple tasks in a high-pressure environment. Some overtime may be requested. Work is indoors (office/kitchen), in an administrative/supervisory role, and requires an ability to manage multiple tasks, and respond to varying and sometimes competing stakeholder interests. The position requires the ability to use discretion and sensitivity and work in a confidential manner.
The ideal candidate will have a combination of the following:
- formal education or equivalent professional experience in delivering food programming;
- excellent communication skills, both written and verbal;
- experience directing and supporting a diverse team to accomplish a wide range of tasks;
- experience in instruction, training or skills development of diverse groups of people;
- experience/knowledge/interest in working in low-income, marginalized communities facing food insecurity and in Northern Canada (in particular Nunavut, Nunavik, Nunatsiavut or Inuvialuit);
- the ability to demonstrate empathy, openness, flexibility and creativity when working with the general public and within an organization;
- experience in crisis intervention and conflict resolution; and
- experience working in the community development or social service sector.
This position is subject to a criminal record check, a child abuse registry check and proof of education and stated credentials. Candidates must currently live in or be willing to relocate to Iqaluit. In line with Article 23 of the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement, preference will be given to Inuit applicants. Fluency in Inuktut is an asset. Annual salary is $85,000.
