The Qajuqturvik Food Centre (QFC) seeks a Finance Officer (FO) for its facility in the heart of Iqaluit. This is a full-time, one-year position to be renewed if funding permits. The QFC is a registered charity that conducts varied programming with the aim of addressing the causes and effects of food insecurity on Iqalummiut and the community of Iqaluit as a whole.

The Finance Officer is the principal administrator of the finances of QFC, ensuring fiscal solvency and transparency. As such, with the support of the Executive Director, the FO is responsible for:

  • monitoring revenues and expenditures to ensure operational requirements are met and within budget, and forecasting future financial needs;
  • soliciting funding from governments, foundations, businesses and private donors, and satisfying funder reporting requirements;
  • developing and implementing fundraising strategies to increase overall revenue;
  • recording all revenues & expenditures in bookkeeping software, preparing monthly financial reports, ensuring registered charity accounting standards are met;
  • tracking staff hours and processing biweekly payroll;
  • producing invoices payable and receivable; and
  • serving as a representative for QFC within the community.

Other duties will be assigned by the ED  as the mission and scope of the QFC continues to evolve. Travel may be required, as well as an ability to handle multiple tasks in a high-pressure environment. Some overtime is necessary. Work is indoors (office/kitchen), in an administrative/supervisory role, and requires an ability to manage multiple tasks, and respond to varying and sometimes competing stakeholder interests. Discretion is needed when dealing with sensitive and traumatic personal issues. Physical fatigue could be a consequence of mental exertion.

The ideal candidate will have a combination of the following:

  • undergraduate degree, preferably in administration or business, with additional fundraising education and/or training;
  • excellent communication skills, both written and verbal;
  • an understanding of financial management and reporting;
  • experience with Ceridian Powerpay payroll software;
  • experience with Sage50 accounting software;
  • experience/knowledge/interest in working in low-income, marginalized communities facing food insecurity and in Northern Canada (in particular Nunavut, Nunavik, Nunatsiavut or Inuvialuit);
  • the ability to demonstrate compassion, openness, flexibility and creativity when working with the general public and within an organization; and
  • experience working in the community development or social service sector.

This position is subject to a criminal record check, a child abuse registry check and proof of education and stated credentials. Candidates must currently live in or be willing to relocate to Iqaluit. In line with Article 23 of the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement, preference will be given to Inuit applicants. Fluency in Inuktut is an asset. Salary is negotiable, based on experience and qualifications.

To apply, please submit a letter and resume to ed@qajuqturvik.ca. Please do not hesitate to inquire in advance if you have any questions or concerns about the position. Only those candidates being considered will be contacted.
