The Qajuqturvik Food Centre (QFC) seeks a Community Chef (CC) for its facility in the heart of Iqaluit. This is a full-time position.
The QFC is a registered charity that conducts varied programming with the aim of addressing the causes and effects of food insecurity on Iqalummiut and the community of Iqaluit as a whole. The QFC works in partnership with Community Food Centres Canada (CFCC) and is set to become a partner site this year. For more information, visit qajuqturvik.ca or cfccanada.ca
The CC is responsible for all food preparation at QFC as well as playing an integral role in skills building. As such, in coordination with other staff, the CC is responsible for:
- Planning menus for QFC community meals and catering contracts;
- Directing a mixed team of kitchen staff, volunteers and training participants in preparing food on-time and within budget;
- Providing hands-on and formal instruction on culinary skills, and assisting the Training Coordinator with the development and implementation of training programs;
- Managing food and kitchen supply inventory and all food procurement for the organisation;
- Maintaining the kitchen and dining room and ensuring that health and safety protocols are followed by all;
- Interacting positively with community members, resolving disputes and fielding complaints; and
- serving as a representative for QFC within the community.
Other duties will be assigned by the ED as the mission and scope of the QFC continues to evolve. Travel may be required, as well as an ability to handle multiple tasks in a high-pressure environment. Some overtime may be requested. Work is indoors in a sometimes hot environment and may require heavy lifting. The ability to collaborate with and support other co-workers to foster an inclusive and supportive team environment is integral. The position requires the ability to use discretion and sensitivity and work in a confidential manner.
The ideal candidate will have a combination of the following:
- relevant formal education or equivalent professional experience in high-volume food services, education, or community development;
- excellent communication skills;
- experience managing a professional food services operation;
- experience/knowledge/interest in working in low-income, marginalized communities facing food insecurity and in Northern Canada (in particular Nunavut, Nunavik, Nunatsiavut or Inuvialuit);
- knowledge of local food systems, their cultural importance and an openness to working within them;
- the ability to demonstrate empathy, openness, flexibility and creativity when working with community members and within an organization;
- experience in crisis intervention and conflict resolution; and
- formal or informal counseling experience.
This position is subject to a criminal record check, a child abuse registry check and proof of education and stated credentials. Candidates must currently live in or be willing to relocate to Iqaluit. In line with Article 23 of the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement, preference will be given to Inuit applicants. Fluency in Inuktut is an asset. Annual salary is $85,000.
To apply, please submit a letter and resume to firstname.lastname@example.org. Please do not hesitate to inquire in advance if you have any questions or concerns about the position. Only those candidates being considered will be contacted.
